In an unprecedented unfathomable order, Governor Asa Hutchinson and the State of Arkansas will execute 8 men in the span of 10 days. This rush to execute 2 men a day is being reported all over the world as an inhumane and barbaric killing spree. Despite this international public outcry, Arkansas readies for the executions.
Families of these men have suffered quietly for years – not knowing when their loved ones would be put to death. In addition to their great sorrow, they carry the guilt and pain of the mistakes their loved ones may have made. Now with execution dates near, the families of these men are also faced with additional financial burdens. Families of three of the 8 men, Kenneth Williams, Jack Jones, Jr., and Stacey Johnson, need our help to make final visits and to arrange for the disposition of the men’s bodies.
Jasmine, the daughter of death row inmate Kenneth Williams, hasn’t seen her father in 17 years. The trip from Washington State, where she lives, to the Varner Unit is 2,300 miles; that’s a 35-hour drive straight through or a $1,500 last minute roundtrip flight. They have been praying that one day before it’s too late, she would be financially able to make the trip to introduce her 3-year-old daughter to her grandfather whom she’s never met. That day has come and she’s not ready. Williams will be executed April 27th.
“ONE LAST THING DEB, I HAVE A 21-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHOM I HAVEN’T SEEN IN 17 YEARS. ALONG WITH A 3-YEAR-OLD GRANDDAUGHTER. THEY LIVE IN KIRKLAND, WASHINGTON. MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN WANTING TO COME TO ARKANSAS TO VISIT ME, BUT THE FINANCIAL COSTS HAVE PREVENTED HER COMING. IF I AM GOING TO BE EXECUTED, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HER BEFORE I GO ONE LAST TIME AND TO SEE MY GRANDCHILD FOR THE FIRST TIME. CAN YOU ALSO SOMEHOW HELP WITH THIS? IF NOT, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE.” Kenneth Williams.
Without your financial help, Williams will not be able to see his daughter and grand-daughter before he is executed.
Lynn’s story is similar. Her brother, Jack Jones, Jr., has been days from execution at least 4 times. Each time, Lynn has endured the expenses and made a way to travel to Arkansas to spend what they thought would be their last days together. Now, with Jones set to be executed April 24th and no stay of execution in sight, she is concerned about the money she needs to get through this harrowing experience and handle her brother’s body after the execution.
“DEBORAH, ATTACHED IS THE CONTRACT/INVOICE FOR THE CREMATION SERVICES FOR JACK. I WANTED YOU TO HAVE IT SO YOU CAN SEE THE AMOUNT I WOULD NEED TO COVER IT. DO YOU THINK YOU COULD ALSO HELP WITH MY TRAVEL EXPENSES? I HATE TO ASK THAT BUT IT GETS COSTLY EACH TIME I COME BECAUSE I NEED FLIGHT, HOTEL, AND RENTAL CAR EXPENSES. IF NOT, I UNDERSTAND, BUT ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.” Lynn, Jack’s Sister.
Judy’s story is quite different. Her husband, Stacey Johnson, has maintained his innocence since being arrested, charged, convicted, and sentenced to death.
“I AM TRYING TO SURVIVE AND NOT LET THE STATE MURDER ME FOR A MURDER I DID’NT DO, BUT THESE WALLS FEEL AS IF THEY ARE CLOSING IN ON ME EVERY DAY.” Stacey Johnson.
Judy met Stacey on death row in 2003 when she was a correctional officer. They married last year and she has been working tirelessly to save his life. Having exhausted a tremendous amount of resources trying to prove Stacey’s innocence, Judy is now faced with the financial reality of planning for his death. Knowing the pain his wife is feeling now and the anguish she will experience after his execution, Stacey has asked for any financial relief she can get to help her through his death.
Please pray for the 8 men in Arkansas who are only days away from being executed and extend an olive branch of compassion and humanity to these 3 families in their deepest time of need. Any donation will help.
